Irvine Regional Park is one of California’s oldest county parks, established in 1897, and it’s aged remarkably well. The 477-acre park sits in a canyon in the Irvine Hills, surrounded by orange groves, sycamore trees, and trails that wind through genuine wilderness just 20 minutes from the 55 freeway.
The horseback riding here is the standout experience. The stables offer guided trail rides for all experience levels — including complete beginners — along routes that wind through the canyon and under a canopy of mature oak trees. It’s the kind of experience that feels memorable even before you’ve finished.
Beyond the horses, the park itself is worth exploring. There’s a small zoo, a lake, and picnic areas shaded by trees that are over a century old. The oak woodland in the back of the park is particularly beautiful — good for a quiet walk after the ride.
For a date, this works because it’s genuinely out of the ordinary. Most couples in Orange County have never gone horseback riding together, and doing something new together almost always makes for a better date than repeating the dinner-and-drinks routine.
