Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park doesn’t get the same press as Laguna Coast or Crystal Cove, but regulars know it’s one of the best hiking destinations in Orange County. The park covers 4,500 acres across two connected canyons, with trails ranging from easy canyon walks to steep technical climbs.
For a date, the Cholla Trail to Wood Canyon is the standard recommendation. The trail drops into the canyon from the Alicia Parkway trailhead, following a seasonal creek through shade trees and past rocky canyon walls. It’s scenic without being strenuous — you can hold a conversation without gasping for breath, which matters.
In winter and spring, the creek in Wood Canyon actually runs with water, and the wildflowers along the trail make the drive from anywhere in OC worth it. Summer mornings are ideal — the canyon stays shaded until about 10AM.
The park connects to Laguna Coast Wilderness Park to the south, so experienced hikers can extend the trip significantly. But for a first outdoor date, the Cholla Trail loop gives you everything: good views, a quiet canyon, and enough time on the trail to actually get to know someone.
