Most people drive past Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve every day without knowing what’s there. Hidden behind a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway is one of the largest coastal wetland restoration projects on the West Coast — and one of the most underrated date spots in Orange County.
The reserve is free to enter and open from sunrise to sunset every day. The main loop trail is about 1.5 miles and runs along a boardwalk and raised dirt path through the wetlands. It’s flat, easy, and scenic enough to justify putting your phone away for an hour.
What makes Bolsa Chica special for a date is the scale of it. Standing on the footbridge at dusk, with the marsh spreading out in every direction and pelicans gliding overhead, feels genuinely peaceful in a way that most OC destinations don’t. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded here, so wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed.
Sunset is the best time to visit. The light reflecting off the water turns everything golden, and the crowds thin out. Bring a light jacket — it gets cool quickly once the sun drops.
