Santiago Oaks Regional Park sits just north of the 22 freeway in a canyon that most Orange County residents have never explored. It’s 15 minutes from downtown Orange, but the park feels remote in a way that’s increasingly rare in this part of SoCal.

The signature feature is the oak woodland. The park contains some of the oldest valley oak trees in Orange County — some with trunks six feet across and canopies that shade entire sections of trail. Walking under them, especially in fall when the leaves turn, is genuinely lovely.

The Windes Nature Trail is the best route for a date. The 2.5-mile loop starts at the parking lot and winds through the oak groves, past a seasonal stream, and up to a ridge with views of the Irvine Lake inlet to the east. The full loop takes about 90 minutes at a relaxed pace.

The park is dog-friendly, which makes it an easy choice for couples with dogs. The trails are wide enough to walk side by side, the terrain is manageable, and the $3 day-use fee is one of the better deals in any OC county park.

Pro Tip

Take the Windes Nature Trail loop — 2.5 miles through old-growth oaks and past a seasonal creek. Fall and spring are the best seasons. Dogs welcome on leash. $3 parking fee payable at the entry kiosk.
