Crystal Cove State Park is one of those rare places in Southern California that actually still feels wild. The beach here stretches for three uninterrupted miles without a pier, boardwalk, or beachside vendor in sight — just sand, sea, and the rugged bluffs of the Irvine Coast.
The historic beach cottages at the south end of the park were built in the 1930s and 1940s and have been lovingly restored. Several are available as overnight rentals, but even if you’re just here for the day, walking past them feels like stepping back in time.
For a date, the formula is simple: park at the Los Trancos lot off Pacific Coast Highway, walk down the wooden staircase to the beach, and head north toward the tidepools. At low tide, you’ll find sea anemones, hermit crabs, and the occasional octopus in the rocky pools near Pelican Point.
The beach faces southwest, which means the sunsets here are spectacular. Bring a blanket, arrive about an hour before dusk, and stake out a spot on the sand above the tideline. This is the kind of date people remember.
